Jah Soldier
Jah Soldier is a third child of Mrs. Sophy Ndiyahashu and Mr. Elias Maiwashe. Born Tendani Selby Maiwashe in Dzanani Musanda in 1980 and relocated to Mbilwi in 1992. Jah Soldier was born as a musician since he started playing paint tins, oil tins and many sounding objects at a very early age. He also played his father’s Mbila as a child until he was taught how to play a keyboard by Emmanuel Mamphogoro in 1991 at Mr. Mureri’s church in Dzanani.
In 1998 Jah Soldier was recruited by Mr. MG Magoro to join the U band as a keyboard player, song writer and as a singer. In 1999 Jah Soldier was recruited by Khakhathi Tshisikule of Khakhathi and Friends where he played keyboards while doing backing vocals. In 2004 Tendani Maiwashe wrote and composed 8 complete songs and recruited Masia Dzivhani, John Mabila, Thivhusiwi Manyaga and Mashudu Maiwashe to start rehearsals for the first Jah Soldiers Album. Jah Soldier then met and had an agreement with Itani Sihadi of Rwistapac records to record his first album. “Thavha Ndi Nngana” was the first album to be released by Jah Soldiers in 2006. Although the album didn’t do well in the market, it paved way for Jah Soldier as an independent artist. The first ever live performance under the name Jah soldiers was on the Good Friday of April 2007 in Makwarela Community Hall where Jah Soldiers had organised a free show for his fans.
In 2010, Jah soldier released a second album titled “Innocent Siblings”. This album, which had 11 tracks, was well received by music lovers as songs like “Ndivha funa hani naa” (known to many as vhule-vhule) made waves throughout the Vhembe district. The third album was released in 2014 titled “Nndededze”. Nndededze was nominated for 2014 SATMA Awards in Best Reggae Album category. In 2015 Nndededze won the coveted TSHIMA award for best Reggae album. Jah Soldier has already finished working on his latest offering that he worked on with Mulalo Mukwevho of the Burning Shak Studios. The album is due for release soon.
