SATMA 2014: The voting has opened

It was all excitement as the final nominees of the 2014 SATMA awards were announced at the Gala dinner event on Saturday 30 August 2014. The glamorous event was held at the Mmabatho Convention Centre in Mahikeng. Artists and their supporters, dressed mostly in traditional gear came out in numbers to celebrate with the nominees of the awards which seek to celebrate the South African traditional music and dance.

The public is urged to go all out and show their support for these artists by voting for their favourite artists/groups. The awards will be held on the 18^th of October 2014 at the University of Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape.

 

The final nominees for the Best Tshivenda Album are Gift Maringa, April Ramufhi, Tycoon 4 sure and Adziambei Band. Other artists in otrher categories include the ever-energetic Vendaboy Poet (Rrrrrrr), Prince Nyadzawela (The project), Funi Nematswerani (Ndi tshifhinga), Humbulani Ramagwedzha (Ndi khou diphina ndi na inwi), Jah Soldiers (Nndededze).

The public must note that this year’s voting system will be a bit different to the previous years. Voters will have to use special SATMA awards sim cards (powered by Vodacom) to vote, which are available from SATMA offices upon request.

Ras Judah's debut album

Finally, the long-awaited debut album by Makwarela’s very own Ras Judah is out. Titled “Let thy kingdom come”, the album boasts 7 original reggae tracks. This album will introduce fans to the man who has a slick and hypnotic voice. Wherever Ras Judah and his band perform, people are always left yearning for more.

Although this is Ras Judah’s maiden album, he has been in the music scene from a very young age, singing in informal youth bands and also in church. Having been raised in a family where reggae sounds were constantly blazing, it is no surprise that this devout rasta chose this genre and made it his own. He has worked with seasoned artists such as ‘Gift Maringa’ and ‘Jah Soldiers’ on their recent projects, ‘Avha nne’ and ‘Nndededze’ respectively. He has an amazing voice that cuts through the music and make the listener easily fall in love with his music.

 

The album opens with the title track, “Thy kingdom come”. This version features ‘Wire’, ‘360’ and ‘Jah Soldiers’ on vocals. The acoustic version of the same song is also on the album (track 4) and features ‘Bellafonte’. ‘You’ is a love song, which according to Judah himself was inspired, written and sung for a very special person in his life. With the catchy line “hezwi vha tshi mmbona ndo tou rali, ndi ene” shaped romantically, it promises to be a song to celebrate love in this women’s month. Dancehall singer ‘Ras Mash’ comes with guns blazing on Track 5 titled ‘Rise again’. Other songs include ‘See us through’, ‘Nnditsheni ndi tuwe’ and the bonus track ‘Mary Jane’.

The album was produced by Tendamudzimu Netshilulu and Mulalo Mukwevho, while all the songs were composed by Ntshudu “Ras Judah” Guduvheni.

Proheed: The future of Venrap

July 18^th is a very special day in the hearts of South Africans and their history. The whole country, if not the world, take 67 minutes to do some good for the community, anyway, anyhow. 2014 was much more important as it is Mr Mandela’s first birthday since his passing in 2013. Muvenment headed up to Jozi and hooked up with the hottest rapper of the moment, Proheed. Muvenment, together with Proheed then headed to Vukukhanye Pre-School in the East Rand carrying some goodies for the little ones. We sang with the kids, danced around and made sure the yard was swept clean for the future rappers of Mzansi. The teachers were more excited and I was glad we could find some gratification by doing something for the community in the spirit of our former statesman.

Now here is a superstar who is getting much airplay, much publicity and as soon as his full album is out, I don’t know what more. ProHeed is a 20 something year–old rapper from Tshamusburg (Tshamutavha) Village, a few kilometers outside of Tshilamba in the Limpopo Province. You might not know his name by now, but believe me, it’s just a matter of time before you do. Full of energy, this m’rapper burst onto the music scene with much hype that one wonders, is this a fluke or for real. Well, those questions will be answered later this year when his debut full album hits the shelves. Proheed‘s lyrics are unapologetic, hard-hitting and sounds real. This is someone who has the right ego for an emcee, bowing down to nothing and taking the rap game to another level. He claims no one can better put down a rhyme like he does and he has taken over as the main man when it comes to Venrap.

In a genre where more seasoned Emcees such as Mizo, Bella, Tman, Post etc. are dominating the industry, the young and energetic ProHeed seems not to be fazed by such. With his stinging fast rap and tight lyrics, there seems to be nothing ready to stop this boy from a rural village of Tshamutavha. ProHeed is busy in studio working on his full-length album which will follow on the heels of his much-publicised single, Vengo which is doing well and receiving the much-needed airplay. He is recording the album with the legendary DJ Davic of the ever-shining Masana Records, who has produced a countless number of hits over the years. From the uproar that Vengo has caused, one cannot wait to hear the full album, which Proheed himself can’t stop singing praises to.

Jah Soldiers is a reggae group from Limpopo who have been in the music industry for almost a decade now. With three albums under their belt, there seems to be no stopping from these roots reggae specialists from Mbilwi. Jah Soldiers’ first album, ‘Thavha ndi nngana’, was released in 2006, followed by ‘Innocent siblings’ in 2010. Their latest offering, ‘Nndededze’, was released to much critical acclaim. Jah Soldiers’ latest album, ‘Nndededze’, stands in line to scoop this year’s award for the Best Reggae category on the popular South African Traditional Music Achievements (SATMA) Awards. The group’s leader, Tendani Maiwashe, is equally excited about this glorious opportunity to represent reggae music in these much coveted awards.

The 2014 edition of the SATMA Awards is about to go down. The voting of the Nominees for these annual traditional music awards has opened and the public is invited to send through their nominations. Mpho Regalo CD/DVD Launch Saturday 05 July 2014 @ UNISA

MPho Regalo will be launching his Live DVD and CD on Saturday the 05^th of July 2014 at UNISA (ZK Mathews Hall) in Pretoria. Recorded in December 2013 at Rhema, fans have been anxiously waiting for the release of this DVD. Some have dubbed it album of the year, and if the CD is anything to go by, I completely concur.

 Mpho Regalo has been mesmerising local gospel circles with his finely tuned classics. When I first heard his own written songs I was taken aback. He is a well-groomed writer, singer, performer, and many countless things that he juggles when executing his God-given tasks. He is so energetic and when performing, he gives it his all and also knows how to engage with the crowd. I must say the performance on this live album was well executed and I am just waiting for the awards season to open so I can celebrate with this brother who hails from Khubvi.

This album is a healer and everything that every believer needs, I mean daily. You will dance, cry, praise the Lord and anything that the spirit will direct.

From the first track this album will take you into some space that you’ll be able to be better believe and say out loud that “I am a winner”. Mpho just knows how to praise the Lord musically that you’ll have no choice but to join along with him. The album brings along a very powerful spirit that you’ll need a dosage of it each and every day.

JAH SOLDIERS RELEASES THIRD ALBUM, NNDEDEDZE

In recent years I have had the priviledge of meeting people who vary in all ways. I take very opportunity to learn from every situation and the people I meet. I feel blessed to have known brethrens, some from home and surrounding places. One of those brothers is Tendani Maiwashe, known as ‘Jah Soldiers’. I tell you, he is one of a kind, a rare breed in these times. He has just released his third album, “Nndededze”. The album is another proof that roots reggae is alive and well. The title track, Nndededze, is a prayer to the almighty to guide us as we cannot make it on our own. Featuring ‘Ras Judah’ of the ‘Next Generation’ (a roots reggae group based in Pretoria), the song will go down as one of my favourites by this Rasta from Mbilwi, Makanga. The album offers songs such as ‘Ndila ndi nthihi’, ‘Thavha ndi nngana’, the famous ‘See me gone’ as well as many others that will keep brethrens and sistrens chanting, meditating and all the good things that this music bringsOn the album, ‘Jah Soldiers’ has featured a legion of rastas on vocals, from Hulisani Ndou (aka 360), Wire, Ras Judah, Vhadau and Gift Maringa of ‘Him only’ fame.

 

‘Jah Soldiers’ is an interestingly humble dude, who has much to offer to this music industry. Watch this space! His previous albums did not yield much success, although may-a-songs are frequently on airplay on some local radio stations. This album will finally bring the breakthrough that will afford him the platform to showcase his God-given gift. The messages that he portrays in his songs touch the body, the mind and the soul.

"Elelwani" at cinemas this weekend

"Elelwani", the much celebrated Venda movie, will be showing in cinemas as from Friday 31/01/2014. The movie, starring Florence Masevhe, premiered at the Durban International Film Festival in 2012 to much critical acclaim. 

 

The film was adapted from a novel of the same title written by T.N. Maumela, a legendary Venda writer. The story revolves around Elelwani, a girl being forced into an arranged marriage according to the tradition of the Venda people.
