Celebrating International Reggae Day 2024 in South Africa, 2024
South Africa is celebrating International Reggae Day 2024 today on Monday 1 July.
International Reggae Day was inspired during a state visit to Jamaica in July 1991 of Nelson and Winnie Mandela. Winnie Mandela addressed a gathering of Jamaican women hosted by then Minister Portia Simpson, and spoke of the POWER of Reggae music to motivate the people of South Africa in their fight against Apartheid.
The need to recognize, celebrate, harness and market this POWER, by and for Jamaica, inspired the birth of Reggae day in 1994. The arrival of the internet thereafter enabled the expansion of the celebration’s focus and outreach to International Reggae Day by 2000.
